About Finocturne

An idea that came out of nowhere

Finocturne really began with an idea that popped into my head one day.

I'm a university student studying finance in the south (but I won't tell you which university). In courses such as financial management and investments, I often work with formulas and calculations. Sometimes, though, the real challenge isn't the formula itself, but understanding what the result actually means.

“I know which buttons to press on a calculator, but do I really know what this number means?”

So I started wondering: what if there were a website where I could do a calculation and find the relevant formula, concept, worked example, and explanation of the result at the same time? That might make learning a little more convenient.

Starting with a few calculators

There wasn't any grand plan at first. I just started making a few tools I knew well and used myself, such as compound interest, NPV, IRR, and YTM.

But as I kept building, new thoughts would pop up: “Could I add this too?” “Wouldn’t it be more convenient if these tools connected to each other?”

And so a website that began with just a few features gradually grew into the Finocturne you see today.

Alongside the calculators, I gradually added interactive learning guides and scenario comparisons. I hope these help people go beyond getting a result to understanding how different assumptions affect it, and how those financial concepts can be applied.

In the future, I also hope to share observations on macroeconomic data, financial markets, and monetary policy through the Finance Journal, creating more connections between learning and the actual markets.

An unexpected experience in building a website

I'm not a computer science student, and I don't have a professional background in web development.

From the first idea to actually building the site, I learned from online resources and used AI tools to help with development. Whenever I ran into a problem, I took my time to research, test, and fix it.

Although AI makes building a website much easier than it used to be, I only realized once I started how many details there are behind features that seem simple.

Sometimes I only wanted to adjust one small thing, and other problems would pop up. (As for whether I’d start all over again if you asked me now… I might need to think about that.......)

Still, watching an idea that existed only in my head slowly become a website people could actually use has been a very special experience for me.

I don't know how far Finocturne will go, or how many people will eventually use it. But even if only a few people have solved a problem through this site, the process of building it from scratch will already have meant a lot to me.

Why Finocturne?

As for the name Finocturne, I actually spent about two days deciding on it. (Naming things is harder than you might think, especially when you want something distinctive that isn’t already taken.)

My first idea was to combine “Fin” from Finance with “CalK” from Calculator. I even deliberately changed the C to a K, only to find that someone was already using the name.

When I couldn't think of a suitable name, I started looking through my playlists for English words that might give me an idea.

Then I came across “Nocturne,” which I really like.

Finally, I combined “Fin” from Finance with “Nocturne,” adjusted it a little, and ended up with Finocturne.

The way the name came about was a little spontaneous, but I'm quite fond of it.

A website that is still growing

Finocturne is still being developed and refined.

I do my best to check calculation results, verify content and sources, and keep improving the experience of using the site. There may still be errors I haven't found, though, or parts that aren't as intuitive as they could be.
